Buckley Towers Parking Saga Shows Importance of United HOA Board

A northeast Miami-Dade County condominium building was recently the subject of the wrong kind of media attention, as local outlets covered nasty litigation between a group of unit owners and the building’s association Board of Directors over required parking payments. This saga underscores how critical it is for condo buildings to have well-run associations and united boards that prioritize the needs of all owners.

The litigation at Buckley Towers centers on allegations that the condo building’s board started charging owners more for certain parking spaces based on proximity to entrances and exits, according to the Miami Herald. The plaintiffs claim the association towed many vehicles that were not in compliance with the new policy.

“To implement the new policy, [Francis] Trullenque and some of his fellow owners assert that the association had many vehicles towed away during a single night,” according to the Herald, citing comments Trullenque made to NBC6 in Miami. “’One night at three in the morning, I came home and there were maybe nine, 10 tow trucks…I call it the tow truck massacre.’”

In Coral Gables, condo owners at Merrick Manor take comfort in knowing there will not be any unwanted surprises, thanks to an engaged Board of Directors that prioritizes the building’s physical and financial well-being.

Merrick Manor’s association maintains a healthy reserve of over $2 million to protect owners and ensure funds are available for future maintenance and state law compliance. Owners should not expect any special assessments for at least the next decade.
