The University of Miami’s ongoing housing supply crisis has gotten so severe that some students are opting to transfer. Others are moving quickly to secure one-bedroom condominiums at nearby Merrick Manor before the Coral Gables building runs out of its final collection of available residences.
Student newspaper The Miami Hurricane reports that new university housing policies and an “overwhelming demand of applications” leave many students with few options. Apartment rents at off-campus communities are prohibitively expensive for many, and these students must compete with older professionals who have much better credit scores and the ability to move-in right away.
“One of my friends told me that she is transferring because she cannot afford housing in Miami,” freshman psychology and criminology major Olivia Vanesko told the Hurricane. “Honestly, I don’t blame her.”
Vanesko noted that UM covers her housing costs through financial aid and with rents at record-high levels, she and other students simply cannot make off-campus living work financially.
